The FireboxI realize that most people under 40 might walk past these historical American contraptions and not give them a second thought. But those of us who grew up in the 50's (and earlier) knew all too well what they were for. You couldn't just pull your phone out of your pocket and dial 911 in those days. You couldn't DIAL 911 in most parts of the country - it didn't exist. If you had a fire you had to run to the corner and pull the firebox! This beautiful example of American lore is on the corner of 5th Avenue and Geary Blvd in San Francisco.
Into the skyNew hi-rises in San Francisco's SOMA district are getting ever taller.
The parkThe consourse of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

Wintertime in NapaThe grapes have been harvested and new fields prepared.
Happy cows in CaliforniaCows basking in the midday sun near Petaluma, California. When I came across this scene I was surprised these cattle were not hiding in the shade as the temperature was a warm 92F (33C). The black of the cows on the pasture against the hills behind topped by a gorgeous blue sky with wispy clouds presented a wonderful picture opportunity. This was shot on my infrared camera, slightly processed in Lightroom then finished in Silver Efex Pro 2. Sony NEX-7, converted to IR 720nm, June 2015, f/1.8 @ 1600th, 24mm fixed Zeiss lens, ISO-400, manual exposure.
Hidden detailsAs a color photograph this scene would just be a mass of green trees (and pale green at that due to the drought) against a deep blue sky. But in infrared the normally hidden trunks stand out in stark contrast to the white tones of the foliage surrounding them. This was taken from above the Mt. Tamalpais fire station in Marin County, California. Sony NEX-7, converted to IR 720nm, June 2015, f/1.8 @ 1600th, 24mm fixed Zeiss lens, ISO-400, manual exposure.
GloryA perfect hill on a perfect day under a perfect infrared sky.
White on whiteA simple cluster of trees in infrared backlit against a hazy sky in late afternoon produced a unique white-on-white affect. The stark black of the streetlamp and street in front adds enough depth to provide distinctive contrast.
